Latrobe Council's ministry of silly walks initiative shared with millions via John Cleese

That's what happened to a council in northern Tasmania - more than six months after establishing its "official" jurisdiction for silly walks.

In an effort to lighten the mood back in May when COVID-19 restrictions were in full force, the Latrobe Council encouraged silliness.

And it wasn't lost on Monty Python co-founder and world famous silly walker John Cleese.

Mr Cleese shared a photo of the sign at Shearwater declaring the jurisdiction of the ministry of silly walks with his six million social media followers across Facebook and Twitter.

"Silliness spotted in Australia!" the post read.

Mr Cleese became notorious as a silly walker as played a bowler-hatted civil servant in a fictitious British ministry.

Back in May, Latrobe Mayor Peter Freshney said it was a simple yet effective way to brighten someone's day.

"We all need a bit of humour and something to break the monotony and anything that I can do in this time to help, I will," he said.

And seven months later, that's still the case.
