The Katter family name remains a force in Queensland and federal parliament with Robbie easily retaining his regional northern seat of Traeger in the Queensland election.
The son of federal MP Bob Katter, Robbie on Saturday was one of the first certain outcomes among a swathe of knife-edge results.
After just 90 minutes of vote counting Katter junior was on track to secure a first preference allocation of up to 70 per cent.
But his focus was not on his own safe seat, which takes in centres such as Mt Isa, but growing the Katter's Australian Party's three seats in the previous parliament.
"We have every right to expect an outcome where we could win anywhere from an extra one to three or four," he told ABC TV.
Of particular interest to Mr Katter is the Cape York Peninsula seat of Cook, which neighbours his own.
Early counting put ALP incumbent Cynthia Lui well ahead with about 42 per cent of the primary vote, but Mr Katter is not surprised by the trend.
"It's something we'd like to see in our hands," he said, admitting it was always a tough challenge.
"That was always going to be a case, where you're up against the mighty resources of the major parties and we have very meagre resources to take them on.
"It could be one of those seats we take off the major parties and continue to hold into future."
In the previous Queensland parliament, KAP held the seats of Traeger, Hill and Hinchinbrook.
Asked of his willingness to help a major party form government in the case of a hung parliament, Mr Katter said he would negotiate but had a long list of priority policies, including mining, water storage and service delivery to rural and regional areas.
"We'll go very aggressive in any negotiation if we get that opportunity, if we're lucky enough to get there," he said.
"I hope that those major parties come to realise that you can't ignore these places for that long and things need to be radically turned around or we'll continue to decline in these areas."
