NSW SES Hawkesbury Unit seeking old cars for road crash rescue simulations

Cars must be complete with tyres so they can be transported around the yard to simulate car crash scenes, and the newer the car, the better.

You won't get the car back, as it will be destroyed in the education process.

Hawkesbury Unit Controller Kevin Jones said cars were "hard to get" these days, and the team would be "very appreciative" of any donations from the community.

"We don't care what type of car they are as long as they're reasonably complete so we can push them around and put them in position," Mr Jones said.

"We can arrange to pick them up, or if anyone has the means to drop them off [at our headquarters in Wilberforce], that would be great."

Mr Jones said the cars would be used in road crash rescue training, for assessments, and to help maintain the SES team's competency and practice their skills to keep our community safe.

This included placing cars on their sides or roofs to simulate car crash scenes, so volunteers could practice stabilisation the vehicles, and using hydraulic cutters and spreaders to cut roofs and doors off.

"On an ongoing basis, we also need cars to use as materials for running courses for new people who are learning road crash rescue skills," Mr Jones said.

Next year, the Hawkesbury SES team will be competing against the best road crash rescue teams across Australia and New Zealand in the annual Australasian Road Rescue Organisation competition.

"We compete against teams from Fire and Rescue NSW and other rescue services around Australia and New Zealand, so it's a pretty good learning experience. We do a lot of training for it," Mr Jones said.
