Donors to Men's and Women's Sheds across Western Sydney will now be able to claim an income tax deduction for gifts of $2 or more, following changes in legislation.
Sheds in the Hawkesbury now qualify for Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status under changes made by the Federal Government to the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997.
They will join other charities such as: the Red Cross, World Vision and The Smith Family, which already have this status.
Assistant Minister for Finance, Charities and Electoral Matters, Senator Zed Seselja, said the legislation would support Sheds in accessing fundraising.
"I am proud that through delivering DGR status for Sheds the Government is partnering with the public in each donation they make, offering a tax deduction for those who donate to Sheds," he said. "Incentivising more Australians and philanthropists to support their local Shed and the amazing work they do."
Western Sydney Senator Marise Payne, said 'shedders' were part of the fabric of the Hawkesbury community.
"For many locals, the sheds are a place to come together, including to create furniture, pottery and art," she said.
"They also form invaluable, informal support networks which make a real difference to their members' wellbeing."
Sheds will have to register with the Australian Tax Office for this status.
