The NSW Rural Fire Service and the National Parks and Wildlife Services have a planned hazard reduction burn planned behind the Islands estate on Hermitage Road, Kurrajong Heights on Thursday and Friday [September 17 and 18].
"This controlled burn will help protect properties and assets in the Kurrajong Heights area and also assist our firefighters to control any future bushfires in this area," said Superintendent Karen Hodges.
"This operation is an important part of our Bushfire Risk Management Plan for the area and there will be further controlled burns oin other areas of the Hawkesbury LGA, weather dependent."
The controlled burn is listed to start at 9am and will include 328 hectares.
Superintendent Hodges said it was important to take advantage of weather conditions conducive to hazard reduction.
"Each year only a small window of opportunity exists where weather conditions are conducive for controlled burns," she said.
"For a hazard reduction burn to be successful we require the right wind and temperature conditions and the ground fueld to be sufficiently dry.
"We advise residents in the Kurrajong Heights area to take appropriate precautions including keeping doors and windows closed, remove washing from clothes lines and ensure any pets are in a protected area.
"Motorists in the area should also slow down and take care if driving through smoke, including keeping windows up and turning your headlights on."
Other controlled burns are planned for the weekend around Kurrajong and East Kurrajong, including 7.2 hectares behind properties [139-148] in Mountain View Close.
