Having fallen in love with the region and its people via his role as McGraths Hill Carpet Court owner-manager for more than a decade, Brendon James, decided to become one of the natives.
"I am proud to say that my family and I live in Wilberforce," he said. "We moved to the area over five years ago and plan on staying for a lifetime."
Carpet Court has been in the Hawkesbury for the past 30 years, 25 of which it has been located at its current site, 6 Curtis Road, Mulgrave.
It specialises in sales and installation of carpet, laminate, vinyl and hybrid flooring.
Mr James took over the business from its previous owners in August 2011.
His is a lifer as far as the carpet game is concerned.
"I left school and was employed as a carpet installer at my parents carpet shop at Castle Hill for approximately 12 years," he said.
"A touch football injury forced me off the tools and into the showroom where I gained invaluable knowledge and a passion for helping people find their dream flooring."
He became a manager before taking on his own store.
A key to Mr James's ongoing success in the area is the fact that his experience is shared with the staff.
Between them, the McGraths Hill Carpet Court team have more than 100 years in the field.
Sales crew Trish and John know their stuff, with more than 20 and seven years experience respectively, while the home measure and quote crew, Ray and Chris, have both exceeded their 25th anniversaries.
They are ably backed by warehouse manager Kyle, admin guru Anastasia and warehouse part-timer Kris.
"We have a great team of installers," Mr James said. "Most guys live and work in the Hawkesbury too. Steve, from Ebenezer, has been with Carpet Court at McGraths Hill for over 30 years and in some cases, has installed floor coverings for three generations.
"Our business definitely thrives because of my staff, who are also members of the community and enjoy spending time in the Hawkesbury. We are passionate about finding the best solutions for our customers."
Mr James said the business had experienced substantial growth over the past nine years, enabling it to double its showroom and acquire a warehouse in Wingate Road.
"Changing technology has enabled us to improve our measuring, quoting and installation practices," he said. "We are fortunate to have Carpet Court head office always innovating and supplying us with the latest and greatest products."
So what is it about the Hawkesbury that appeals to Mr James?
"The community spirit," he said. "I love looking after the locals."
