HAWKESBURY locals campaigning for a Kmart in our town are over the moon with the news announced by Kmart parent company Wesfarmers that the Target Windsor store will be converting to a Kmart store.
A Target spokesperson confirmed Target Windsor would be "converting to a Kmart Hub store in early 2021".
Kmart Hub is a brand new format for the group.
Pitt Town mum, Tara Harvey, has been campaigning for a Kmart in the Hawkesbury for years.
In November 2016, Ms Harvey started a Facebook group called 'Bring Kmart to Windsor NSW, 2756', together with fellow Kmart fans Sharon Sparkl and Elise Smith, also from Pitt Town. The group has over 2,800 followers.
For years, Ms Harvey and a group of Hawkesbury mums have been making regular 'Kmart runs' - sometimes late at night - to the Penrith and Stanhope Gardens stores, to get their Kmart fix.
Soon, they won't have to travel as far.
"It's exciting, I can't believe it is finally happening," Ms Harvey told the Gazette.
"I know it's not going to be huge, but at least it's something."
Ms Harvey said she hoped to see large home wares and kitchen wares sections at the new format Windsor store.
"A big clothing selection would be great, too," she said.
Wesfarmers announced at the end of May that it would be closing a number of Target stores around the country, and some would be converting to Kmart.
"The decision to transform the Target network, and particularly the very difficult decision to close some of our stores is not one that is made lightly, but one that is necessary to improve the commercial viability of the business and to support the thousands of people we employ," said a Target spokesperson.
"There will be 10 to 25 large format Target stores and 50 Target Country stores which will close over the next twelve months. A number of stores will also be converting to Kmart where the store is suitable to do so. All remaining Target stores will continue trading as Target."
