Lynwood Golf Club's Encourage Shield Team continued its winning ways last week reaching the pinnacle of their level in junior team golf in NSW, claiming the State Final in the Encourage Shield.
The competition was fought out over two days at Horizons Golf Resort on Monday and Tuesday, January 20 and 21.
After winning the 2019 Encourage Shield at the end of last year, the team was coming together for one final match at the Encourage Shield level.
They defeated North Bridge in a great match that went down to the final holes in some games..
The first contest last week was between Lynwood and Shelly Beach.
The weather was warm and the course was hard and fast but with a good grass cover on the fairways due to some recent rain.
At the turn Lynwood had a slight advantage leading in 3 matches with one even.
The back nine saw little change and Lynwood won the contest 4-2, going through to the final.
Moruya were the other team to advance to the final and faced Lynwood the following day.
Lynwood were playing well and led 4-2 at the turn.
They maintained their lead and went on to win comfortably 4-2, defeating Moruya and taking out the Encourage Shield Final for 2019-2020.
Coach of the Lynwood side, Gavin Thorpe, said he was happy with the result.
"All the matches were relatively tight," he said.
"Due to our kids being at a high level the matches were off very low handicaps, with our kids giving shots. The players did a really good job getting the best result.
"They really had to fight as a lot of the games came down to the last couple of holes ... like the fifteenth, sixteenth, seventeenth holes. The results were really in the balance up until then."
Thorpe said that the team's seven members will now go back to their regular solo competiitons.
"There is nothing after this ... but it would be nice to have the same team return and play in the Junior Pennants next year.
"I want to see the same team return and continue to play together since they have done so well together this year.
"But until then they will just play individual events.
Thorpe thanked Lynwood Country Club, and Jason King, the head pro coach at the club, for their help throughout the past year with the team.
"Also thank you to all of the parents who helped out," he said.
"They would help on the course and got the kids to all of the events and everything they needed throughout the year. We wouldn't be able to play without the parents and they were great support all year long."
