Students impacted by the recent bushfires across South Australia will get counselling and a backpack of supplies as they head back to school next week.
The state government has announced a package of measures including waiving of school fees for 2020 for any families affected by the fires.
"Many families in the Adelaide Hills and on Kangaroo Island have lost everything in the recent bushfires and with school going back next week, these backpacks will mean children have what they need to start the school year," Human Services Minister Michelle Lensink.
The package includes the provision of free school uniforms and backpacks filled with stationery, books, a lunchbox and a drink bottle.
Principals have also been given resources and training materials to help teachers identify and support students experiencing trauma.
Education department specialist teams in psychology, wellbeing and social work will be on hand to assist staff and students in need.
David Hartas, whose Lobethal property was impacted by the bushfires, said the provision of supplies and other support for his three young children, meant the return to school was one less thing for his family to deal with.
"We're normally really organised but it's the week before school goes back and we haven't even had a chance to think about it," he said.
"Honestly, this is above and beyond what I would have thought people would help us with."
