Hawkesbury District Health Service (HDHS) has provided much needed saline solution for fire fighters battling the Gospers Mountain 'mega-fire' to help them clear their eyes of toxins, smoke and ash.
The hospital, a division of St John of God Health Care, donated more than 9,000 vials of saline to fire fighters and other emergency services before Christmas, when it was identified that these were a much sought after item on the fire grounds.
HDHS Chief Executive Officer Strephon Billinghurst said the hospital was pleased to be able to support the emergency workers who have been battling the blaze that has affected the region since October.
"Our staff not only work in the region but live here too and many have either been personally affected or have friends and families that have been impacted by the recent devastating fires," he said.
"We were keen to offer their assistance in whatever way they could and we were delighted that we could offer the donation of saline vials to make a difference to those who are protecting our community."
The hospital has also provided laundry services and is supporting staff to donate their time or services.
"We have laundered over 70 police uniforms for those officers who have spent time on the fire grounds," Mr Billinghurst said.
The hospital also put the call out to its staff for donations of non-perishable snack foods and within one day they had stock piles of a variety of foods to keep the firefighters nourished.
