Cattai's Jack O'Brien will be hitting the pool to raise money for the Starlight Children's Foundation as part of the 2020 Starlight Super Swim challenge.
This will be the second consecutive year that Jack will be swimming in the challenge.
The 10-year-old discovered Starlight when he was involved in a serious accident on his motorbike in July 2018, in which he smashed his femur.
He was in Westmead Hospital for 10 days and required a five-hour surgery that saw a metal rod placed in his leg.
The following five months Jack was in a wheelchair and on crutches. He couldn't put any weight on his leg.
While in hospital, he spent some time in the Starlight Express rooms. He saw what other kids were going through and wanted to know if he could help.
His mother, Lisa, saw the Super Swim Challenge on Facebook.
"Jack loves swimming, he wants to go to the Olympics," said Lisa. "When I told him about the Super Swim he said 'yep, I'll do it', so I signed him up.
"His first goal was to swim 60 kilometers and he was going to raise $5000.
"Jack smashed his money goal raising $8500 and then wanted to beat his swimming target, so he swam 61.7 kilometers. He was awarded highest fundraiser."
When ever Jack has a visit to the hospital he makes sure he goes to the Starlight rooms to check in on people and to follow what's happening.
He is a member of Galston Swimming School and attends Oakville Public School, where he was just named School Captain for 2020.
"Jack was supposed to have a surgery to remove the rod some time between now and March but he has so many swimming events he wants to do ... he has state swimming and he wants to set new records in his last year of school," said Lisa.
"He negotiated with his doctors to push the surgery back until May."
The Super Swim begins on Australia Day and will run for 30-days.
"This year Jack's goals are to swim 100 kilometers and to raise more than he did last year," said Lisa.
"Like we did last year, he will be getting help from locals who know and support him ... like our butcher, who put on a barbecue last year for Jack.
"He will be doing five swimming sessions each week. They will be for an-hour-and-a-half each.
"He needs to swim 3.33 kilometers a day to reach his goal.
"Swimming is his dream ... and he wants to help Starlight knowing that the work they do doesn't end.
"He's giving back to Starlight who helped him .. and he hopes he can help kids who have to spend a lot of their lives in hospital or who won't be leaving."
