Queenslanders are sweltering through a blistering heatwave as the temperature soars past 40 degrees in parts of the state.
Brisbane residents who can't find a pool or a beach are sticking close to the air conditioning as the city sweats through a 39C maximum - the same temperature as Birdsville in the state's west.
Elsewhere in the state, Gatton almost reached 42C, Ipswich and Greenback soared past 40C.
A hot and very dry air mass from the outback is to blame to the sudden spike, which is up to 12 degrees above average for some areas.
While the sudden burst of heat is forcing residents to reach for the fans, Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Jess Gardner said they were "not expecting any records to be broken at this stage".
"We could see some records broken for how long a run of hot temperatures we've had but we would have to look at that after the event," she said.
"We will see a bit of relief on Sunday with cooler temperatures and higher humidity but we're not expecting any significant rainfall for the next week or so."
