He's best known as the Black Panther, but Chadwick Boseman is far from the Marvel Cinematic Universe in his latest outing.
The actor has swapped protecting the boundaries of Wakanda for protecting the people of Manhattan in 21 Bridges.
The crime drama sees Boseman's Detective Andre Davis tasked with tracking two thieves who have killed eight police officers during a drug robbery gone terribly wrong.
Davis is a second-generation cop, and has a reputation for shooting perps in the line of duty. He is driven, and committed to bringing about justice - a trait he picked up from his own father, who was killed trying to arrest a trio of criminals 19 years earlier.
But it's clear from the get-go that Davis' task is not going to be simple. Emotions run high in the force, especially when eight families need to be told the devastating news that their loved ones aren't coming home.
Davis is paired with a Narcotics detective, Frankie Burns (Sienna Miller, American Sniper), who is a similarly skilled cop and wants to see their evasive criminals captured - not necessarily alive.
Stephan James (If Beale Street Could Talk) and Taylor Kitsch (Only the Brave) play the thieves/murderers. Kitsch's character is pretty thinly drawn, but James' character has some depth - and that's mostly due to the actor's conflicted performance. He is definitely one to watch in the next few years.
It seems the story of 21 Bridges was built around the central idea - shutting down the island of Manhattan to find cop killers.
This manhunt conceit is impossible not to compare with The Fugitive. And while Boseman's speech about shutting the bridges, rivers and tunnels doesn't have quite the impact of Tommy Lee Jones' famous "warehouse, farmhouse, henhouse, outhouse, doghouse" speech, it's still pretty enjoyable.
There's also a nod to Best Picture-winning action classic The French Connection with a subway chase that's not executed anywhere near as well, but is still fun to watch.
There aren't a lot of surprises in 21 Bridges, and it's not too memorable, but it is a decent way to spent a couple of hours.
