BBQ lovers won't want to miss the Hawkesbury's first Showdown in the Showground, a whole weekend of family fun, smoked bites, beers and live entertainment.
Scott McCoy of BlackBear BBQ - the Wetherill Park crew responsible for bringing the Showdown to the masses - said the intention was to offer a family-friendly event that people of all ages could enjoy.
"We're all locals to this area and we understand that it can be hard to find entertainment the whole family can enjoy. We wanted to give back to the community and organise this event. We will have kids rides, food stalls, eating competitions, Motocross Stunt show, IWA wrestling demonstrations, and of course, local community displays, merchandisers and stalls," he said.
One of the highlights of the event will be the 2019 Natural Wood Co. Invitational BBQ Competition - being dubbed 'the richest BBQ competition in Australia' - which sees 30 of the top Australian barbecue teams along with 20 top teams from around the world grill, roast and smoke, in a bid to win a share in $50,000 in cash, prizes and trophies.
Local lad Craig Munro of Munro's Quality Meats Wilberforce will be representing the Hawkesbury as captain of the NSW team in the State Butchery Challenge - another highlight of the Showdown weekend.
"Twenty of the best butchers from around the country will compete in a 'state of origin-style' butchery comp on Sunday, which should be really exciting," Mr Munro said.
"We'll have a whole lamb and a beef rump and we'll be given specifications to cut to for each round, culminating in a mystery challenge at the end, which could be anything."
Judges are industry leaders from the Australian Meat Industry Council, Meat & Livestock Australia, and TAFE NSW, and each state will raise money for their own charities, with the NSW team supporting the Hawkesbury's own City Slickers Appeal, which provides help for drought-stricken farmers.
"I'm quite excited to be captain of the NSW team. We've got some of the best young talent from all over - Jonny Emney from Mudgee, Cal Holgon from Canberra, Nathan Alcock from Wollongong and Garreth Gorringe from Ryde," Mr Munro said.
In conjunction with Showdown in the Showground, Mr Munro is also co-hosting a Barbeque Masterclass with Moe Cason at Ace Butchers Supplies in Jamisontown on Thursday, November 7, 4pm-9pm.
Mr Cason is a self-taught pit-master and big BBQ personality from the USA who has honed his skills through competing in more than 260 contests.
"The BBQ master class will cover how to start your fire, how to keep temperatures consistent, how to trim your meat, how to use your sauces and rubs correctly, and cooking times and temperatures," said Mr Munro.
Showdown in the Showground will take place at Hawkesbury Showground, Racecourse Road, Clarendon on Saturday 9 (11am - 10pm) and Sunday 10 (11am - 6pm) November.
