THE roof restoration works at the Hawkesbury Companion Animal Shelter are now completed.
The improvement works involved the replacement of the entire roof over the existing dog kennels.
The new pitched roof minimises direct sunlight during the summer and optimises sunlight during the winter to provide more comfort for companion animals waiting to be rehomed.
As part of the new roofing, new stormwater pipes have also been installed to capture rainwater into new rainwater tanks. This water will then be reused for washing kennels and watering plants at the Hawkesbury Community Nursery next door.
Hawkesbury Mayor Barry Calvert thanked the donor Anna Zylstra who made the works possible through a donation of $100,000 from her deceased estate.
"Without this significant donation these works would not have gone ahead," the Mayor said.
Clr Calvert said this donation and an earlier private contribution from another donor and the additional funding from Hawkesbury City Council meant the team could create an environment for the animals that would improve conditions in both winter and summer.
The ongoing improvements to the Companion Animal Shelter haven been overseen by the Hawkesbury Companion Animal Shelter Working Group, chaired by Councillor Danielle Wheeler, a special network of volunteers and community members.
