Long-time Hawkesbury resident Valerie Mayfield turned 104 years old last week, celebrating the milestone with family, friends and staff at Carol Allen House Richmond nursing home, where she resides.
Valerie May Mayfield (nee Baker) was born on May 2, 1915 - just seven days after the landing in Gallipoli (to put that into perspective).
Valerie was born and raised in inner Sydney, the third-eldest of seven children.
She moved to a farm in Glossodia as a young bride and her young family was raised in the Hawkesbury. Her second child was born in the maternity hospital in Windsor.
Valerie and her family purchased a milk run in the area, and delivered milk to the locals using a horse and cart.
Valerie's family moved the milk run business to Northmead for a time, and she returned to the Hawkesbury when she was in her eighties.
Valerie's family said she had always lived an active life, with one of her great loves being tennis.
She has also been lucky enough to have the opportunity to travel and has seen many wonderful places; she often tells stories of her travels to those who visit her at Carol Allen House.
Valerie has two children, five grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren, all of whom say how lucky they are to have her in their lives.
Valerie's family thanked all those who helped celebrate Valerie's 104th birthday - a magnificent milestone.
