Brazil is planning pension reforms aimed at saving the government more than 1 trillion reals ($US270 billion) over 10 years, including a higher retirement age.
The proposal, which President Jair Bolsonaro handed over to Congress on Wednesday, would allow women to retire at age 62 and men at age 65.
There is currently no official minimum age for retirement, but many people already retire in their 50s.
The savings would also come from changed tax rates and an optional system of saving for retirement on accounts partly managed by private entities.
Previous governments have failed to reform the pension system, which has been a major contributor to the country's large budget deficits.
The government's proposal still needs the approval of Congress.
