During a total fire ban, no fire may be lit in the open. This includes incinerators and BBQs which burn solid fuel (i.e. wood or charcoal).
A gas or electric BBQ may be used only if:
- It is on a residential property within 20 metres of the house or dwelling,
- It is under the direct control of an adult,
- The ground within 2 metres of the BBQ is cleared of all materials which could burn, and
- There is an immediate and continuous supply of water available.
The penalty is up to a $5,500 fine and up to 12 months jail, advises the NSW Rural Fire Service.
A Total Fire Ban generally lasts for 24 hours from 12 midnight.
