THE pupils of Londonderry Public School have unveiled a brand new mural they created at the school for Remembrance Day.
All 220 children were involved in creating the mural, which includes poppies painted from each of their fingerprints.
Sue Debono, School Learning Support Officer, said the mural was something significant the kids could look upon for years to come, and use for observances like Remembrance Day and ANZAC Day.
She said she thought the school should have a more permanent reminder of our ANZACs and what they gave up for us to live in this country.
“ANZAC Day for me is very special and I feel like it’s something the kids should know a lot more about,” said Ms Debono.
“Unfortunately it’s only recognised once a year, but if there’s a memorial at the school it’s a good place to stop and reflect, and they can lay a wreath and get a better understanding [of the observance].”
The school held an unveiling ceremony on Tuesday, November 6, during which they laid wreaths at the mural and bagpipes were played, ahead of Remembrance Day on Sunday, November 11.
“The mural was carefully thought out and with the help of some huge hearts and talented minds we are very proud to have our piece complete,” said Ms Debono.
“Staff, students and parents have over the last few months created a beautiful mural.”
The mural is painted on the wall in front of the office, and it can be seen from Londonderry Road.
The school also paved the area around the mural and lined it with rosemary bushes to keep the tradition of ANZAC Day alive.
This year marks a century since the end of World War I.
