Young local drivers have been encouraged to take part in Hawkesbury Highway Patrol’s Young Driver Awareness Program taking place on Friday, August 17.
Between January 2009 and May 2015, young people aged between 17 and 25 years accounted for 41 per cent of all fatalities and 32 per cent of all drivers and riders involved in fatal crashes within the Hawkesbury Local Government Area (LGA), according to police statistics.
The free young driver program is organised and run by experienced members of the Hawkesbury Highway Patrol, who outline potential dangers to young people on our roads.
Videos created by the Victorian Transport Accident Commission are used throughout the presentation. The video’s are created using actors and special effects but are far and away the most realistic re-creations of crashes that can be seen.
“Some of the videos are very confronting, but nothing that is not suitable to showing to someone aged 15+ upon whom you are trying to impress a road safety message,” a police statement said.
The presentation runs for about two hours.
The program has been running since 2013 with more than 800 Hawkesbury young drivers and their parents having participated. Positions on the program are limited.
