STUDENTS from Hawkesbury High School have made the final six schools in the second year of the Sydney Water ‘Brand Without a Bottle’ short film competition.
The Hawkesbury students have proven their strong environmental culture and creativity by becoming finalists.
The Brand Without a Bottle short film competition asked students across Sydney to use their creative skills to write compelling short scripts and storyboards to persuade people to choose tap water and help reduce plastic waste.
Plastic water bottles take anywhere from 400 to 1,000 years to breakdown and are among the ten most common rubbish items picked up on Clean up Australia Day.
Sydney Water removes over 1 million plastic bottles from local waterways each year.
Liz Minor, Senior Advisor Education and Community Partnerships at Sydney Water said “45 clever and creative scripts were submitted and the overall standard was fantastic.”
The six finalists will have their ideas professionally filmed and hosted online. The short films will be judged by both a professional panel and launched online for popular vote.
“Last year we received over 18,500 votes from the public.”

All finalists receive a water refill station and winning schools receive funds towards water related learning resources.
Winners will be announced on Thursday, September 13 at a screening event where the students will watch their films on the big screen.
The other five finalist schools are Chifley College Shalvey Campus, Muirfield High School, Hurlstone Agricultural High School, James Ruse Agricultural High School and William Carey Christian School.
Ms Minor added, “Australians purchased over a billion plastic water bottles in 2017. By sharing their story about the problems associated with plastic water bottles and encouraging people to choose tap water, these schools are inspiring our community to change and reduce plastic waste.”
