Controversial former Queensland Chief Justice Tim Carmody has announced his retirement.
Queensland's attorney-general released a statement on Tuesday saying Justice Carmody will resign his commission as a Judge of the Supreme Court of Queensland in a little over a year's time, on September 10, 2019.
Mr Carmody has been serving on the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal after standing down as Chief Justice in 2015, and will also resign from that role in 2019.
He was the subject of controversy when he was elevated directly from Chief Magistrate to Chief Justice of the Supreme Court by the Newman government in 2014, leading to accusations he was too close to and openly supportive of that government.
He resigned on July 1 2015 following the Palaszczuk Labor government taking power, just under a year after he had taken up the position.
He clashed frequently with other members of the state's judiciary, notably with the President of the Court of Appeal Justice Margaret McMurdo, who refused to sit with him on any court after criticising him for his contact with child protection campaigner Hetty Johnston during an appeal by Daniel Morcombe's convicted killer.
Brisbane barrister Peter Davis QC strongly opposed his appointment as Chief Justice, and resigned as president of the Queensland Bar Association in 2014 after tapes of a private meeting with then-attorney-general Jarrod Bleijie were leaked in which he criticised Justice Carmody's appointment.
