HAWKESBURY Council collected 40,000-kilograms of chemicals from residents when it held a free-drop off session at the Hawkesbury Showground on July 1.
Over 50 per cent of the collected chemicals were paints, with batteries and oils also making up a sizeable proportion according to Hawkesbury Council.
The Household Chemical Cleanout day allows residents to dispose of household quantities of chemicals including paints, herbicides, pesticides, poisons, fire extinguishers, pool chemicals, household cleaners, motor oils, fuels, batteries, and fluorescent globes and tubes.
Council said in 2017 there was 25,000-kilograms of chemicals collected.
“It’s great that Hawkesbury residents are using the Chemical CleanOut offered by Council to dispose of waste in environmentally friendly ways,” said Hawkesbury Mayor Mary Lyons-Buckett.
