HAWKESBURY Council has completely changed its mind about the name of the Old Hawkesbury Hospital, granting the historic building the official title it has commonly being known as.
At the May 29, Council debated giving the building an official name, but ultimately decided not to.
However, at the June 13 meeting, the position of Council was reversed and the building will now be known as the Old Hawkesbury Hospital.
Originally, councillors debated changing the name to ‘Deerubbin House’.
Cr Emma-Jane Garrow said at the May 29 meeting, that clients of the businesses operating out of the Old Hawkesbury Hospital building had trouble finding the place.
The entrance to the Deerubbin centre is via George Street, however, many people were trying to access the building via Macquarie Street, or simply ending up at the current hospital.
Indeed, a google search for the Old Hawkesbury Hospital shows directions to the current Hawkesbury District Health Service.
On June 13, Council originally had proposed to engage in public consultation, listing a number of name changes.
However, a motion was moved to simply to officially grant the building the name of Old Hawkesbury Hospital, and this was supported by councillors present.
Council will now also prepare a policy for building names.
