DON’T be surprised if you didn't see 19-year-old South Windsor resident Gemma Healey at the Supanova Comic-Con and Gaming Exhibition over the weekend.
Dressed up as Where’s Wally’s arch nemesis Odlaw, Ms Healey attended the pop culture convention with an unlikely companion, a bank robber from “The Dark Knight” also known as her boyfriend, Dylan Wilson.
The Sydney based exhibition saw thousands of fans inspired by imaginary worlds and dressed from head to toe in cosplay, a contraction of the words ‘costume’ and ‘roleplay’.
While Ms Healey got her costume from Wattle-U-Bee at Mcgraths Hill, Mr Wilson sourced his outfit from local op-shops and even crafted some of his own props. The pair also hired a makeup artist to help complete their looks for the event.
Originally, Ms Healey was going to attend as Dobby, a male house-elf from the Harry Potter series, but then decided to go as Odlaw for something different.
“Odlaw was cheap, simple and effective, and it didn’t cost me an arm and a leg,” she said.
After wanting to go to the event for years, this was the first time the couple have attended.
A range of meet and greet celebrity opportunities, Q&A events, video game contests, and “behind-the-scenes” sneak peaks were offered, but the main attraction for the duo was “Wolf Creek” actor John Jarratt.
Another highlight was seeing how other people dressed up, which Ms Healey said left her feeling inspired for future costumes.
“I got ideas and I hope to one day get into full costume,” she said.
