THE contract to replace Windsor Bridge has been awarded to the Georgiou Group by the state government.
Roads and Maritime Services said the contract was awarded after a competitive tender process.
Construction of the replacement bridge is scheduled to begin in September.
“The new bridge will provide a safe and reliable crossing, and improve safety and traffic flow for all road users,” an RMS document advising of the awarding of the contract said.
Preparatory works will begin on the site in coming weeks the RMS has advised, including maritime investigations by Cosmos Archaeology.
Community Action for Windsor Bridge president Harry Terry said the awarding of the contract was the ‘death warrant’ for Thompson Square.
“This is a vindictive, destructive project that will do nothing for the long-suffering motorists of the Hawkesbury, fails to deliver the promised flood immunity and destroys a unique and highly significant Australian heritage place,” he said.
The RMS says otherwise.
“The project will remove the Bridge Street alignment that divides Thompson Square, presenting an opportunity to unify the green space in Thompson Square and re-establish the visual and physical connection between the town and the river,” they said.
“[It will] increase flood immunity from a new bridge that can cope with higher levels of flooding and will have the same flood immunity as surrounding approach roads on the northern riverbank.”
