BOTH Hawkesbury Valley and Hawkesbury Ag College had big wins at the weekend in NSW Suburban Rugby Union action.
Hawkesbury Valley’s first grade team picked up their second win of the season when they hosted St Ives at McQuade Park on Saturday.
The final scoreline was 33-5 in the round seven match in the third tier competition.
Valley coach John Martin said it was a great day for the club, with all three grades securing wins.
In first grade, Martin said the team worked its way into the match.
“It was a good game. We gave them a bit too respect in the first half and really didn't control the game like we should have,” he said.
“We kicked away with a couple of good tries in the final 20 minutes of the match.”
Martin said Jason walker was the team’s man of the match, and also was awarded the three points from the referees on the day after a fantastic performance.
He added that John Ireko had a good game as did Josh Martin, while Cameron Kwok came on at flyhalf in the second half and produced a spark for the team.
Martin said the team escaped injuries and was seeing a few players return to the fold as well.
“We've got a few blokes coming back. There is some pressure on players to keep their spots now, which brings a bit more competition to training,” he said.
Hawkesbury Valley’s Back to Hawkesbury Day is this weekend, and has been combined with Ladies Day. Martin encouraged people to turn up for what would be a huge home game against Redfield on Saturday at McQuade Park.
Meanwhile, Hawkesbury Ag College had a 59-12 win over Old Ignatians.
Coach Mick West said errant passes crept into the team’s game at the weekend, and they blew a number of chances to increase the score.
All in all, however, it was a solid team effort said West.
“They were very physical and structured, it was a good hit out for us,” he said.
Ben Goodier and James Bailey backed up their efforts from last week and produced more fine displays on the field said West, who added that Romeo Raciqa played well at flanker.
West said apart from one player sustaining a minor back injury, Ag College too had a clean bill of health at the conclusion of the match.
In round eight, Valley will host Redfield while Ag College has a long road trip to Newport.
