SWIMMER Harrison Thomas has been named the Hawkesbury sports person of the year by Hawkesbury City Council.
Thomas qualified for the Pacific School Games this year, the highest level of swimming for schools, where he won a gold medal in the 50-metre butterfly, and a silver medal in the 4x50-metre freestyle relay.
Thomas was given his award at a ceremony on May 21. He is now preparing for the Australian Age Championships, to be held in Sydney this year.
Molly Mamo and Caitlyn Ferrier were named joint junior sports people of the year.
Mamo is a tumbler with a fantastic record tumbling record on the international stage, and is ranked one number in the world for her age group of 11-12 years. Mamo was first in NSW in the double mini tramp, first at the Australian level in double mini trampoline and the national club competition, and last year won a gold medal while competing internationally in Bulgaria.
Ferrier has won a number of state and Australian athletics titles, and in March competed at the Australian Junior Athletics Championships. She won the 16 girls 400-metre race at the Australian All Schools Athletics Championships in December, and also posted a qualifying time for the Youth Olympic Games in the process.
Madison Cooper was named the all abilities sports person of the year. Cooper competed at the national level earlier this year, where she won a number of gold medals.
Heather Lee was named senior sports person of the year. Lee set two world records for race walking earlier this year.
The Kachan School of Tumbling and Performance was named team of the year. Mamo trains with KTSP.
Marilyn Pearson, who trains Ferrier with the Bilpin-Kurrajong Little Athletics, was named coach of the year.
Taylah Flood, Caleb Fairweather and Tully Murphy were given sporting excellence medallions.
Jennifer Carter, Lochlan Brian, Kellie Black, Julia Black, Susan Ferrier, Laurie Fairweather, Stacy Richards and Sue Oehm were given service to sport medallions.
