HAWKESBURY Ag College has come up with another big win in NSW Suburban Rugby Union action, while Hawkesbury Valley, who celebrated Anthony Connon’s 150th game, was narrowly defeated at the weekend.
Both Hawkesbury clubs played hosts to their opponents at the weekend in round six of the division three competition.
For Hawkesbury Ag College, they thrashed their opponents, winning 116 to 7 against St Ives.
Ag College ran up a big score the week earlier against Brothers winning 76-0, but the team was guilty of handling errors as they sought to pile on the points according to coach Mick West.
The team clearly learned from their mistakes the week previous, as they played a near perfect game said West.
“We threw the ball around when it was needed, unlike last week when we just threw it around clumsily trying to chase points,” he said.
After St Ives scored the opening try under the posts, West thought the scene was set for a close match, however, Ag College gritted its collective teeth and proceeded to pile on the points afterwards.
“Our support play was probably the best part of the game,” he said.
“We supported each other very well. Every time we broke the line we had guys backing them up. It was was actually very pleasing rugby to watch.”
West said fly-half Jake Bailey, who missed last week’s game, and forward Ben Goodier, had good games, although said it was pretty hard to find anyone who had a bad game.
West said the team came through unscathed in terms of injury from the match, but lamented the lopsided scorelines from past weeks.
This weekend, the team will play Old Ignatians. West said Ag College had only played them once in recent times and that was back in 2016, so he was unsure of what to expect from them at their home ground.
Meanwhile, Old Ignatians was the team that defeated Hawkesbury Valley in a 17-7 match at McQuade Park on Saturday afternoon.
Valley captain Anthony Connon played in his 150th match at the weekend in what turned out to be a close contest with Old Ignatians.
Valley will no doubt take heart at seeing the Ag College scoreline, as the team prepares to take on St Ives this weekend in another McQuade Park showdown.
In the seconds, both clubs had a victory at the weekend. Hawkesbury Ag College won 55-0 over St Ives, while Hawkesbury Valley won by 41-34.
Third grade saw a Hawkesbury Ag College 12-12 draw, while Old Ignatians won 31-22.
Finally, the Colts saw Hawkesbury Ag College win 51-19 and Hawkesbury Valley lose 37-19.
