RICHMOND’S Heather Lee walked a massive 344 kilometres during the month of March - almost 100 kilometres over her 250-kilometre target.
The 91-year-old was participating in Cancer Council’s fitness fundraising challenge, The March Charge, in honour of her late husband Leonard Lee who died from lung cancer in the late 1990s.
Ms Lee is a champion competitive race walker, and reached her 250-kilometre target only three weeks into March.
She walked hard during the last week of March in an attempt to reach 350 kilometres but, with six kilometres to go, she decided to give herself a half-day off on the last day of March so she could rest.
She said she was proud of her achievement and wanted to thank all those who donated to the cause. At time of publishing, she had raised over $1500 with more donations still to come in.
“I walked around the town and some of the [Richmond] businesses gave me quite good donations towards the Cancer Council. I’d like to them them,” she said.
Later this month, Ms Lee will be heading to Perth to compete in the World Masters Games, where she is hoping to take out the 10-kilometre race walking title.
“I took out two [golds in the World Masters Games] in Tasmania at the end of last year, in the three-kilometre and five-kilometre but there was no opportunity to do the 10-kilometre last year,” she said.
