Pennant Hills-Cherrybrook Stags celebrate 50th season

The Pennant Hills-Cherrybrook Stags have capped off 50th anniversary celebrations with an under-10s premiership and several grand final appearances.

Club president Gordon Boath said that it’s been a “pretty rewarding” season for our little club.

He added that reaching the milestone of half a century in the community came down to the Stags’ family-orientated values.

“It’s taken a lot of hard work from a lot of hard working volunteers,” Boath said.

“The volunteers are the backbone of the club and it’s a matter of everybody rolling up their sleeves and pitching in.”

Boath said generations of families had played for the club, including four ex-A-grade players and current committee members who started with the club in juniors and are now coaching their son’s teams.

It’s no different for Boath, a self-described “rugby league tragic”, who got involved when his family moved to the area and his son took up the game.

Starting with the club 10 years ago as a team manager and coach, he continued onto the committee where Boath said he is still “the new kid in town” compared to others at the club.

“Over the 10 years I’ve been here, I’ve worked with a number of people who had been with the club for the 10 years previous and even longer,” he said.

“A few of those guys have retired recently and it was a big loss, not only because of the assistance they give but they have a lot of knowledge.

“It was a shame to see them go but they’ve put in so much. That’s how a club achieves 50 years, with people like that putting in that kind of service.”

The Stags play in the relatively small North Sydney District Junior Rugby League competition, which has grades up to under-11s before a combined competition with the Manly competition from under-12s.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary season, the club had a fundraising ‘Comedy for a Cause’ night earlier this season, as well as a 50 year reunion scheduled for November.

Boath said that the club was keen to give back to the community by offering a 50 per cent reduction in registration fees for the 2018 season for under-7s to under-11s. Registrations will be open from October 1.
