Yarra City Council for ‘fairer’ rentals
An inner-city council is leading the charge to support fairer rental rules in Victoria amid a major review of the state’s tenancy laws, claiming short tenancies can stop people getting involved in their community.
The City of Yarra has become the first council in Victoria to urge the government to make rental laws fairer by scrapping “no reason” eviction notices and introducing additional minimum property standards among other measures.
Last month the council voted to support a Tenants Union of Victoria request to join its Make Renting Fair campaign, advocating for improved safety and security of tenure and privacy for low-and-middle-income tenants.
