FORMER Londonderry trainer Anthony Azzopardi’s Nangar Flame won the group two Richmond Derby on Friday night at the Richmond Race Club.
Azzopardi pocketed $40,000 for the win, which saw his dog beat out second placed runner Mack Tux, trained by Bruce King, by more than a second.
Victorian trainer Jeffrey Britton’s Mumma Josie took out the group two Richmond Oaks race, also pocketing $40,000, on Friday night too.
Azzopardi’s Mitcharlie Mia also ran in the Oaks and came fourth, though it was Mitcharlie Mia, who Azzopardi rated a better chance of winning, when he spoke to The Gazette last week.
Nangar Flame was a $16.60 outsider going into the Derby.
In the John McCombe Memorial Trophy, it was Daniel Flanagan’s Explosive Range who won the race, and $4000 for the first place.
Race club general manager Brad Adam said he was very happy with Friday’s meeting and the club was now preparing for May’s $100,000 Richmond Riches Race series.
