A second University of Sydney college has come under fire for "ritualistic humiliation" after students revealed sexual activities would regularly be broadcast over the college's PA system.
A former student of St Andrew's College, Kendra Murphy, has told Fairfax Media that college leaders would broadcast weekly news of sexual encounters between students during the college "lolly buffet".
"At 9pm the college seniors would announce things like 'Mary' and 'Joe' were seen hooking up, or they saw people going to Sancta [Sophia College], heard a three-way was on there," she said.
One week after the college's "victory dinner", Ms Murphy was herself the subject of the broadcast to the college campus after an incident with a fellow St Andrew's student.
Gathered around the lolly bar, student leaders told the 285-strong cohort that Ms Murphy and a fellow collegian had been seen going back to her room together. Messages saying "you f---ed this guy" followed, said Ms Murphy.
"I don't remember anything. I woke up with a hickie in a pool of vomit," she said.
Ms Murphy said the college subsequently launched an internal investigation and the student was suspended.
The Principal of St Andrew's College, Wayne Erickson, said the practice of outing students who had sexual relations through the buffet "hook-up" had been ended.
"We agree that what [Ms Murphy] experienced was unacceptable and inexcusable," he said. "At the time we worked closely with [Ms Murphy] to assist her and to ensure that she received every support. This does not excuse in any way the unacceptable behaviours she experienced."
The university's student representative for residential colleges, Justine Landis-Hanley, herself a college student, said that the behaviour was indicative of college culture.
"I find it shocking but I find it believable. The deplorable culture in these colleges is completely deranged," she said.
"It is this kind of ritualistic humiliation driven practices that stem from creating a sense of comradery, it's about breaking them down as an individual," she said. "Something has to be done."
Fairfax Media can reveal that broadcasting the names of students who have had sexual relations with each other is just one of the activities students at St Andrew's have undertaken.
It can also be revealed that two St Andrew's students have been expelled from the 140-year-old college after they burnt a gay pride flag following the college's formal last semester. When the flag was found the following morning, it drew outrage from some members of the student body.
"It is bewildering and disgraceful that this has happened," wrote one student. "Offending anyone, especially in this extreme way, is not who we are. It will not float at Drew's."
The flag-burning occurred after a night of excessive drinking at the college, fostered through a culture of partying led by student leaders.
Facebook posts from a senior tutor at St Andrew's seen by Fairfax Media encourage students to undertake a "Bachelor of Inebriation" where students consume 15 drinks at eight different venues while vomiting on "chunder markers" and being prevented from urinating.
"Soiling oneself, whilst generally dissuaded, is an acceptable form of excretion to sustain a honours proposal," the posts state.
Other leaders have taken to religious appropriation to address their fellow collegians. "As-Salam Alaikam my fellow footyheads and footymoles" one leader wrote, using the Arabic term for "peace be with you".
St Andrew's is the second of two of Sydney's most expensive tertiary residential institutions to come under scrutiny in the past week after a student publication at neighbouring Wesley College publicly named students who it said had slept with the most people in a map called the "RackWeb".
A spokeswoman for the University of Sydney said the institution was working with the colleges to improve processes for joint investigations.
"Behaviour that is intimidating, abusive, disrespectful, or threatening, including more serious instances of harassment, assault or rape, are not acceptable within our community or on our campuses," she said.
