Child approached in Colyton

A man approached a seven-year-old boy in Colyton on Tuesday.

Police said the man spoke to the child, who was standing in a park between Barr and Bass streets, about 8.30am.

He allegedly asked for the boy’s name and address, but he ran away to a nearby school and police were called.

Police are investigating and want to speak to a man described as being in his 30s, with a dark complexion and wearing a navy blue cap.

They also urged parents and carers to discuss ‘‘Safe People, Safe Places’’ messages with their children.

‘‘Make sure your parents or another adult you know knows where you are at all times,’’ a police spokesman said.

‘‘Know where safe places are; a shop, service station, police station, library or school.

‘‘If you are ever frightened you should go to one of these places and ask them to call the police.’’

He also said children should never talk to people they do not know and if approached, yell out: ‘‘Go away, I don’t know you.’’

Anyone with any information is urged to contact St Marys detectives on 9677 7501 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
