Assault and failed bag-snatch in St Marys

A woman was punched and slapped when someone tried to snatch her handbag in St Marys on Wednesday.

The woman, 26, was walking in Queen Street at about 7pm.

She felt a violent tug on her shoulder and fell to the ground when someone tried to steal her bag.

She said her attacker hit her before running away empty-handed towards St Marys railway station.

Police are investigating the incident and have released CCTV images of a woman they believe could assist them with their inquiries.

She is described as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander appearance, with a dark complexion, 20- to 25-years-old, of thin build, with dark-brown hair tied in a bun and wearing a dark-coloured singlet and black jeans or tights, with a white pattern down the side.
