WANT to join a fun and sometimes cheeky social group in western Sydney?
The New Pioneers Social Club began in 1978 and has 150 members, about a third of whom are from the Hawkesbury. They meet every week at someone’s house or a venue, for barbecues, dances or other social events.
Members are all over 40, averaging in the 50s, and are about half men and half women.
President Alan Currall said it started as a singles club back in the 70s but is now just a social club, with about half the members single and the rest partnered.
He said there are usually 30-40 people at any single event, but their Christmas in July function normally gets over 100 people.
Their next get together is this Saturday, June 21 at a member’s home at Werrington County. It’s a fancy dress barbecue with a ‘hobo’ theme, but you don’t have to dress up - or in this case, down, and you don’t have to bring anything other than what you want to drink as it costs $10 to cover the food.
The following week, June 28 it’s a lunchtime barbecue at a member’s place at Minchinbury.
