Gilroy College rocks 'Hairspray'

The opening song of the Broadway Musical Hairspray, “Good Morning, Baltimore”, woke up the audience and had them tapping through four evening performances as well as a matinee for local year 5 students.

The college had to put more rows of seats out on Friday and Saturday evening to cater for the extra ticket sales.

People said it was better than the movie, while others asked if the students, all from Gilroy Catholic College, were professional actors and singers.

The production team, led by Nicole Usher, said students had been rehearsing since October and showed dedication from the beginning.

‘‘There was a real sense of team spirit among the students, they consistently encouraged each other and during the production week, it was pleasing to see how they pumped themselves up both before and after each performance,’’ she said.

‘‘As a producer it was extremely rewarding to see them make the characters their own and by the last two performances the students were adding lines and gestures much to the enjoyment of the audience.

‘‘It really brought the show to life and you could see how much fun they were having on stage.

‘‘I am so proud and honoured to be a part of such a significant Gilroy event and congratulate the students on their efforts.’’

Julianne Chidiac, one of the musical directors and former Gilroy student, said it was a long process. ‘‘Hairspray is a difficult musical to get right, but our kids did it,’’ she said. ‘‘We could not be more proud of their enthusiasm, dedication and willingness to exceed even their own expectations.

‘‘To every student in this musical: a well-earned standing ovation. ‘‘

Artistic director Jae Wedd was impressed by the commitment and hard work that students undertook to get this production to such a high standard.

‘‘They poured their very heart into the musical and as one of the students said ‘we’re not a cast and crew anymore we are a family’.’’
