Castle Hill RSL's trampoline club is really jumping

THE joint is really jumping at Castle Hill RSL Trampoline Club. Well, nothing much new in that.

The joint has been a jump above the rest for a while now — seven years.

Castle Hill has just won the overall club award for the seventh straight year at the NSW elite acrobatic-and-trampoline titles, held at the new state gymnastics centre at Rooty Hill RSL this year.

And by definition, its 34 competitors had to perform well for the club to win.

"They took home 55 medals, including 21 state titles," said Belinda Cox, the club's gymnastics program manager.

"There were many outstanding performances but to highlight just a few; newcomer Liam Christie, 11, took out three titles — individual trampoline, double mini-trampoline and tumbling.

"Kira Ward, 14, also took out all three disciplines in the U17 women's.

"Our silver medallist from the 2013 world championships in 2013, Imogen Florian, 13, took out a gold and two silver in the U/15 age division."

The results qualified 23 Castle Hill athletes for the national championships, in May.

The Rooty Hill event also served as a qualifier for the Indo-Pacific Championships in South Africa in June.

Cox said selectors usually pick a team of about 40 to go, and three coaches.

She's been there and done it before, but hopes to be doing it again.

Dominic Clarke won't be going to South Africa, but only because he has a prior engagement.

But he's doing good and jumping fine.

The 17-year-old left for Canada yesterday for the Pacific Rim Championships, and hopes to be one of the two Australians chosen for the Youth Olympics.

Open-age competitors Matthew Weal and Leanne Van Rensburg are virtual certainties for South Africa, being fixtures in representative squads.

Cox said hopes were high they could bounce to greater heights, the 2016 or 2020 Olympics.
