Next stage   for Blacktown Hospital

Next stage to begin

Health minister Jillian Skinner has announced $800,000 to progress planning for the next stage of the Blacktown Hospital redevelopment.

Stage one of redevelopment at neighbouring Mount Druitt Hospital is due to be completed early next year.

"This community is already home to the state's largest hospital infrastructure project - the $324 million Blacktown Mount Druitt Hospital expansion, which is due for completion in 2016," Mrs Skinner said.

"That project is ahead of schedule, which is why we are able to take the important first step towards planning stage two of the redevelopment of the Blacktown Hospital campus.

"Stage two will cover redeveloping the emergency department, adding operating theatres, creating increased inpatient beds and boosting maternity and paediatric services. This will ensure this community has access to the state-of-the-art hospital it needs and deserves."

Mural welcomed

A bright new jungle-themed mural adorning the walls of the treatment room in Nepean Hospital's children's ward has made the room a welcoming and calming environment for children and their parents.

The presence of medical equipment and the prospect of possibly painful procedures can often make the children's ward treatment room a frightening place for children.

"Ideally any examination procedure in a hospital setting should create as little trauma for a child as possible," acting nurse unit manager Shannan Waddups said. "We want the children in our ward to be as comfortable as possible so we examined the environment children are in when undergoing these procedures."
