Mall-to-mega park plan stalled on place

PLANS to transform Dawson Mall into a mega park have temporarily been put on hold.

Blacktown councillors deferred a report that identified a site for each of the five wards at a recent meeting.

The report recommended the first be built in Dawson Mall, opposite Mount Druitt Hub.

Liberal councillor MarkHolmes had hoped the report would be endorsed so the process could start early in the new year.

But Labor councillors questioned some of the proposed sites, including Mount Druitt, and wanted amendments.

‘‘These mega parks shouldn’t be at the expense of our small reserves,’’ Cr Alan Pendleton said. ‘‘I can’t think of a worse location that’s near a shopping centre [Westfield] and between a senior citizens’ centre and a library.Westfield will love it because it will bring people there and they don’t have to pay a cent but the local area will suffer. It’d need extra parking.’’

Councillor Stephen Bali proposed The WaterHoles Reserve orWoodcroft Lake as better Ward 4 options than DawsonMall.

‘‘We don’t have a problem with the concept of mega parks,’’ he said. ‘‘But local ward councillors should sit down with council officers from the start to develop ideas. This report is a good start but it needs greater input from the council.’’

Liberal councillor Isabelle White had mixed feelings about theMount Druitt location.

‘‘The location is great but when I envisage a mega park I see something like Blacktown Showground,’’ she said.

‘‘The size of theMount Druitt location isn’t ideal but it’s easy to get to.’’

She believed gym equipment should be a feature of a proposed mega park in DawsonMall.

Mayor Len Robinson agreed to defer the report to a future policy meeting to discuss alternative locations.
