2014 study will review arts options

THE Hills mayor has assured residents the council has not turned its back on its arts community.

Cr Michelle Byrne said a study would begin next year to identify options for supporting the arts.

Her comment follows confirmation from Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian the entire The Hills Council site, including The Hills Centre, was being acquired to make way for the North West Rail Link.

"The Hills Council unanimously supports the North West Rail Link, unanimously supports the move of council to Norwest Business Park and unanimously supports the location of Showground station on the current council site," Cr Byrne said.

She said a number of people had expressed concern about the future of performing arts in The Hills.

"I can assure everyone that council is listening," she said.

Deputy mayor Andrew Jefferies said: "We won't be throwing away ratepayers' dollars on replicating the [Parramatta] Riverside Theatres.

"Suburbs such as Carlingford and North Rocks missed out on valuable community facilities because we had to pay down the debts incurred with this white elephant [The Hills Centre]."
