WITH Christmas just around the corner, many families think about adopting a pet.
But to avoid the annual post-Christmas ‘dumping’ of animals back to rehoming centres, there are a few things you need to think about before adopting.
Animal Welfare League NSW Hawkesbury Valley Centre has a number of cats that are currently looking for their ‘forever homes’, like Mina and Abbey (pictured).
To help you make the right decision before adopting one of these fluffy friends, AWL Australia has partnered with pet food supplier Purina One to provide some helpful information.
Dr Jo Righetti, Purina One Ambassador and National Ambassador of AWLA, said: "Making sure you and your family are ready and able to care for a new pet is crucial as they look to you for constant care.”
Dr Righetti said individuals and families ought to ask themselves the following five questions, before they start searching for a new four-legged family member.
Do you have the time? A new furry family member needs feeding, exercise, health checks and more. You will need to be there for them everyday to take care of them.
Do you have the money? Pets aren’t free, they are another mouth to feed and another family member to take care of. Vet bills and food cost money so ensure you’re financially stable enough to take care of a pet effectively.
Do you have the space? If you live in an apartment then maybe a large or energetic dog breed isn’t the right choice for you. Adopting an animal that suits your situation will mean you both get the most out of life together.
Do you have the patience? Adopting a new pet, especially a puppy or kitten, requires patience as you toilet train them and encourage certain behaviours. Without patience to see this through you may be left frustrated and not enjoy the experience of bringing them into your family.
Do you have the right circumstances? Pets can live well into their teens, which is a long time to commit to caring for something else. If you are planning on having kids, travelling, moving, downsizing, etc, then factoring a furry family member into any plans is a must from the start.
Cats available for adoption at Hawkesbury Centre are fostered by different carers to ensure they get the best care.
