THE Kurrajong Country Women's Association branch members were cheering on Friday morning, following Dick Smith’s $1 million donation to the national organisation.
Mr Smith visited Tooraweenah in the central west of New South Wales on Wednesday where he donated $5000 to the area’s branch for a new kitchen, and handed over the six figure cheque for the Country Women’s Association.
Although the Kurrajong Branch is unsure as to how it will benefit as the organisation’s State Office handles the finances, Kurrajong Secretary Celia Blomfield Acree knows the money will be used appropriately.
“We promise Dick Smith that whatever the state decides to do with the money, it will be put to a good cause,” she said.
The organisation was founded in 1922 by country women who were fighting isolation and an absence of health facilities. Since then, 1855 branches now run nationwide with over 44,000 members.
These members often donate their time at local hospitals and schools, as well as organise projects with schools in the community.
Modest about the work which the Kurrajong Branch partakes in, Ms Acree said it is a team effort.
“What our branch does is really a drop in the ocean compared to what the state does as a whole,” she said.
Kurrajong CWA branch celebrated 90 years of service to the Hawkesbury community in May this year.
