ST MONICA’S Catholic Primary School in Richmond held its first ever walkathon on Friday, June 15 to raise funds for technology for the classrooms.
Ninety families got involved, walking from the school to Richmond Park where they enjoyed a picnic.
Leanne Duval, Year 2 teacher and coordinator of special projects, said the walkathon served the dual purpose of raising money for class readers and robotics for the classrooms, while celebrating the close family relations the school has between its teachers, parents and children.
“St Monica's School is a very close family community with a supportive parents and friends committee and a very welcoming school community. Our children are friendly and very respectful towards each other. Events like this celebrate our uniqueness and closeness as a school community,” Ms Duval said.
“Money raised will go towards buying new home readers for our classrooms as well as funding a robotics program. We have started using mini robots such as Spheroes and Ozobots. These are small programmable robots which teach the children skills in programming and coding - skills needed for future employment.”
The families walked from the school grounds, up Bourke Street and down Windsor Street into Richmond Park.
The school holds an ‘athon’ every year, with a different theme. This year the focus is on families; last term they held a family talent quest with mums and dads performing with their children on stage.
