A commemorative ceremony including a memorial unveiling and dedication service to honour the memory and actions of Flight Lieutenant Newton on the 75th Anniversary of the awarding of Victoria Cross for his actions was held recently at the Chapel Memorial Garden, RAAF Base Richmond.
Flight Lieutenant William Ellis ‘Bill’ Newton was the only Australian airman to receive a Victoria Cross for action in the South-West Pacific and the sole recipient by a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) pilot flying in a RAAF Squadron during the Second World War.
