RICHMOND High School students celebrated International Women’s Day with a special event in support of two women’s charities - Days for Girls and Sole Hope.
Female students in years 10 and 11 were joined by representatives of community group Women With Altitude (WWA) for the day, and participated in a range of activities including putting together kits for Days for Girls – an international program providing access to menstrual care and education.
Guest speaker Sarah Morse spoke about a World Vision Study Tour she took to Africa when she was 17, and her work helping the poor.
“From the slums of India to the orphanages of Romania, [Ms Morse] has met some of the world’s poorest people,” said teacher Fiona Nixon.
“Since 2010, her focus has been on human trafficking intervention in Spain and Europe. Most recently, [Ms Morse] has been working in Australia to train and educate businesses in the Modern Day Slavery Act.”
The day included talks from business women who wanted to help foster future female leaders.
To coincide with the International Women’s Day activities, year 10 and 11 boys were involved in a presentation by Marco Capobianco from the Conviction Group – a young men’s health charity – who covered topics on the changing culture in the workplace, and relationships.
“The day was a success at Richmond High School, with both the boys and girls giving it the thumbs up,” said Ms Nixon.
“It was interesting and refreshing to hear the comments from the girls after they had had the opportunity to do something to help someone else who was not as fortunate as they.”
