HAWKESBURY Cricket Club’s Poidevin-Gray Shield team was defeated by Gordon in the semi-finals of the under-21s competition at the weekend.
The Hawkesbury team squeezed into the finals after defeating Sydney University in the final match of the regular season in January.
However, Gordon was too good for the team on Sunday, winning by four wickets.
Gordon won the toss and sent Hawkesbury in at Owen Earle Oval, and the decision proved to be a good one.
Jordan Gauci and Harry Ridgewell both had 35 runs each, a team high for the Hawks, who were bowled out for 140.
Despite the low total set, Hawkesbury’s bowlers, led by Aidan van den Nieuwboer did their best to defend it and likely sent a panic through the Gordon sheds at one stage.
The Gordon openers dug in and got along nicely, putting a big dent in the required runs before Jas Cheema struck.
Cheema dismissed captain Axel Cahlin, who made 43, first with a caught and bowled, and then claimed the other opener, Jamie Bekis, who made 26, not long after.
After the first two wickets fell, Michael Roberts and Oliver Zannino made a 38-run partnership before van den Nieuwboer claimed four wickets in quick succession.
Roberts went with the score a 3-11, then Zannino at 4-112. Matthew Wright went at 5-118 and then Matthew Parkinson at 6-126.
However, van den Nieuwboer’s good spell had to come to an end and the Hawks could not get the remaining four wickets and move onto the next finals round.
