Masters Games gold medal winner Heather Lee and Australia’s Fastest Blind Man Ben Felten were among the lucky ones to carry the Queen’s baton when it made its way through Penrith on Sunday.
Mrs Lee, 91, and Mr Felten, who was accompanied by his seeing eye dog Orson, were part of the contingent to carry the baton from Tench Reserve to Jamieson Park.
They were joined by other Hawkesbury and Blue Mountains residents.
Strong crowds lined the route to cheer on the baton bearers as they made their way to Jamieson Park.
Former Sydney Swans player Michael O’Loughlin carried the baton into the park. He was greeted by Penrith MP Stuart Ayres and Penrith Mayor John Thain.
The relay, part of the pre-Commonwealth Games activities, is travelling a record 230,000kms around the world. While in Australia, it will be carried by 3,800 baton bearers.
Penrith was one of only four metro NSW locations the baton visited during its 10 day route through the state.
The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games will be held from April 4-15.
It will attact more than 6,600 athletes from 70 Commonwealth nations.
