THE Hawkesbury’s Oscar Stubbs and the NSW blind cricket team won a blind cricket national championship in January.
Stubbs and the NSW team went through the competition undefeated, and beat Victoria in the finals to win the tournament, which was played in Geelong from January 21 to 26.
The team was coached by Stubbs’ dad Jason, and played in the National Cricket Inclusion Championships, which also featured an intellectually disabled competition and deaf competition.
Stubbs was only dismissed once in the competition, and scored 127 runs at a strike rate of 264 said dad Jason. Against Queensland, Oscar made 53 not out, his high score for the tournament.
Oscar, who was the youngest in his side and one of the youngest in the competition, also had three run outs in the field over the seven games played.
“Oscar loved it,” Jason said.
“He was invited to go to the Australian team's camp as well. They recently left to go to Dubai and he met all the guys in the Australian team and became quite friendly with them.”
In blind cricket, a white ball is used, which has bells in it. The players are broken up into three categories, depending on their degree of blindness.
Oscar is in the least restricted sight category, while some of his team mates are completely blind and play through their hearing.
